Memories of a Dying Soldier

1986
The pain.
Flowers in the field
sprouting forth anew each spring
Summer storms, gentle and strong,
bringing cleansing rains an life-giving water.
Leaves on the trees,
playing their musical song of color in the autumn breeze.
Col, crisp snow
brightening every day of winter
The pain.
Face, friends : family, lovers.
Loves past,
Loves present,
Loves future.
Face of lost loves,
of loves never wanted,
of loves never possessed.
The pain.
The sky darkens;
A storm comes
violently shaking the world.
Men, ripped from their homes;
women left as widows;
children left fatherless.
Death all around.
The pain.
A feeling of weightlessness;
A felling of being held.
A face,
the face of a comrade.
The face blurs,
the light dims.
The pain,
ends.
